This week my grandmother turned 99… For those who have already been at La Masia, you won’t forget her cheerfulness and her incredible health condition at all levels, which keeps surprising us. She walks in the forest every day, hugging the trees, eating slowly, taking care of her body, singing and smiling at life… And she discovered her passion when she was 90!

I decided to ask her if she would like me to interview her for the blog and share with you some of her secrets… and she happily accepted. Today I share with you the most special interview I have ever written in the blog: a lovely chat with my grandmother. I hope you like it and that it inspires you.

Grandma, what is the first thing you do when you wake up?
I wake up and I feel happy, happy that nothing hurts and I thank life for everything I have. I like to turn on the radio and listen to some music or an interesting program that nourishes me. So I slowly wake up to start the day calmly.

And what is your ‘good night’ ritual?
I like to wash my face and put on some cream. I also massage my legs to improve the circulation. When I am already in bed I like to pray and thank life again. I practised yoga for 10 years, before my husband got sick, and from yoga I learned to release and relax. It taught me how to breathe deeply and it helps me a lot before going to sleep.

What are your main hobbies?
I love walking. I do it twice a day. I especially like walking in the forest, surrounded by nature. I used to be a dressmaker, but I discovered my passion when I was 90, thanks to a friend who encouraged me to take Patchwork lessons… and it fascinates me! I also do gymnastics twice a week. I love it and it keeps me active. I never get bored. If I have free time I read, I do the newspaper’s crosswords (that I never finish) or I cook.

What is your favourite food and what are your eating habits?
I like to eat all kinds of food, I eat very slowly (as you know), and I don’t eat much meat (I never liked it too much). My favourite dishes are vegetables’ soup, cod with potatoes and lentils with apple. For dinner I don’t eat a lot. I like going to sleep with the digestion done. I always drink water and I love infusions, especially the ones made from the thyme and rosemary that I collect from the forest.

What are the moments of your life that you’ll never forget?
My greatest learning was to share life with my husband Jaume. I recall that one day we went for a walk (at that time we weren’t married) in the countryside… suddenly, we saw some horses running out of control… and Jaume grabbed me, hugged me and protected me… It was a very special moment. We spent almost a year getting to know each other before the first kiss… I think that was very special and that built a very solid love. The worst moment of my life was the loss of my son. It was a very hard moment, I overcame it slowly, but eventually I did. I knew that becoming sick from that sadness wouldn’t bring him back and that it wouldn’t be good for anyone. Thinking about my parents gave me a lot of strength.

What is the best advice your parents gave you?
She answers in Catalan: "si vols viure, de moltes t'has de riure", which means "if you want to live, you have to laugh at many things". From my parents I learned to be hard-working, to give myself to my family, to live with serenity and respect.

¿Qué consejo me darías Abuela?

What advice would you give me, Grandma?
We are in the world only for a while … make the most of it!

From our beautiful talk I’ll keep interesting lessons such as ‘it’s never late to discover your passion’, and that to be in contact with nature, to be optimistic and to thank life nourish your soul, and that things done slowly are usually better.

Thanks Àvia for allowing me to share a piece of you and thank you for reading me.
